MCP servers for game VFX compared

MCP servers that let an AI agent make visual effects, compared: ParticleFX Studio for 2D game effects in any engine, effekseer-ai for Effekseer files, Unreal servers with Niagara tools, and EffectCraft.

Updated

An MCP server lets a coding agent such as Claude Code, Cursor or Codex use a tool directly. For visual effects there are a few now, and they do different jobs: one makes effects that any engine plays as sprites, one edits a particular tool's effect files, and some drive a whole game editor. Checked on 2 November 2026. The servers other than ParticleFX Studio are made by other people; what is written here comes from their own READMEs.

Which one fits

  • A 2D game, in any engine: ParticleFX Studio. The agent builds a real particle effect, looks at rendered previews of its own work, and exports a sprite sheet with the data file your engine reads: Godot SpriteFrames, TexturePacker JSON for Phaser and PixiJS, Aseprite, GameMaker, a grid for Unity, or a Roblox flipbook. The effect plays as an ordinary sprite, so there is no plugin to install in the game.
  • Effekseer effects: effekseer-ai. A community project, not part of Effekseer itself. It edits Effekseer's own effect documents through Effekseer's official core library and exports the runtime files that Effekseer's engine plugins play. It does not control the Effekseer editor, and it needs Effekseer installed on Windows.
  • Niagara in Unreal: an Unreal editor server such as Monolith. It works inside the editor on Niagara systems as well as Blueprints, materials and much more. The effects stay real-time 3D, simulated by the engine.
  • Motion graphics rather than game sprites: EffectCraft. An open-source compositing and animation app whose engine commands are also available over MCP. It is closer to a video tool than to a game particle tool.

For a 3D game built around Effekseer or Niagara, use the server for that tool. For 2D effects, or effects that should play the same in any engine, ParticleFX Studio is the one built for it; the Effekseer comparison covers the two tools themselves.

What the ParticleFX server does

  • list_presets searches the 850+ library effects, and create_effect copies one into your account or starts from a blank canvas.
  • edit_effect changes it with the same edit language the studio and its own agent use.
  • render_preview returns a labelled contact sheet of the loop for the agent to look at, and analyze_effect checks that the loop closes.
  • export_effect renders the effect at full size and returns a download link the agent can fetch into your project.
  • build_effect hands the creative work to our own effects agent instead: describe the effect and it is built for you, for 1 build (Basic) or 10 (Pro).

Connecting, searching the library, editing and the first 20 previews of each day are free; a new effect costs 1 build and each export 1 build. Every tool and its price is on the tools reference.

Questions

Is there an MCP server for Effekseer?

Not an official one. effekseer-ai is a community, MIT-licensed project that edits Effekseer effect files and exports runtime files on Windows, using your own Effekseer 1.80.6 install.

Which MCP server can make particle effects for Godot or Unity?

The ParticleFX Studio server makes 2D effects and exports them as sprite sheets with Godot SpriteFrames or a grid for Unity, so they play as sprites in either engine. Editor servers for Godot and Unity work on your scene in the editor, so there the effect is whatever the agent builds with the engine's own particle system.

Do I need to install anything for the ParticleFX MCP server?

No. It is hosted: add https://mcp.particlefx.studio/mcp to your client with an API key, or sign in with your account where the client supports it.
