ParticleFX Studio and Effekseer compared
Effekseer and ParticleFX Studio compared: free open-source 3D particle effects with engine runtimes, or baked 2D effects, pixel art and an AI agent in the browser.
Effekseer is a free, open-source (MIT) particle tool. Its effects usually play in real time through runtimes for Unity, Unreal, Godot, WebGL and Cocos, and it is strong at 3D effects. ParticleFX Studio is built for 2D games: effects are baked into GIFs and spritesheets that any engine plays as a normal sprite, with a pixel art mode and an AI agent. Checked on 8 October 2026.

When Effekseer is the better choice
For 3D games, or when an effect must be simulated in the engine at runtime, react to the camera or scale freely in 3D, Effekseer and its engine plugins are the right fit, and they are free.
When ParticleFX Studio is the better choice
- Your game is 2D and you want effects that cost no more than a sprite and look the same everywhere.
- You want pixel art on your game's palette.
- You want to avoid an engine plugin: a spritesheet works in any engine, including GameMaker, Phaser and custom engines.
- You want to describe effects to an agent.
