When Pixel FX Designer is the better choice

If you want a desktop app that works offline and is paid for once, or you already have a library of Pixel FX Designer projects, it remains a good tool. Its stable version is 1.1.8 from April 2024, with a version 2 beta available.

When ParticleFX Studio is the better choice

  • You want HD and pixel art effects in one tool.
  • You want to describe an effect and have the agent build it, or have your coding AI make effects over MCP.
  • You need engine data (Godot SpriteFrames, TexturePacker JSON, GameMaker strips) rather than images alone.
  • You work on macOS, Linux or a Chromebook, or across several machines: there is nothing to install and saves follow your account.
  • You want to start from a finished effect: every library effect is free to download or open and change.

Questions

Is ParticleFX Studio a free Pixel FX Designer alternative?

The studio, every library effect and their downloads are free in the browser, and a free account exports 3 effects a day. Plans from $7.99 a month add the AI agent's larger allowances, unlimited exports and engine data.

Can I import Pixel FX Designer projects?

No. ParticleFX Studio imports its own .pfx.json documents and the original ParticleFX format, not Pixel FX Designer projects. Exported images from any tool can be used as sprites in an effect.
