How to make a sprite sheet from frames

  1. Export your animation frames as PNG files (from Aseprite, Krita, Blender, After Effects or any tool), numbered in order.
  2. Press Choose file above and select all the frames together, or drag them all onto the box.
  3. Check the preview. Frames of different sizes are centred on the largest one with their bottoms lined up, so a character's feet stay put.
  4. Under Sprite sheet, set Columns (one row: set it to the frame count) and Padding (1 or 2 px stops neighbouring frames bleeding in when the engine filters the texture).
  5. Press Download sprite sheet (PNG), then use the numbers under Import settings in your engine.

Grid or packed?

This maker writes a grid sheet: every frame in a cell of the same size. Every engine can slice a grid with no extra file. Packed sheets (frames trimmed and fitted tightly) save texture memory but need a data file such as TexturePacker JSON to say where each frame is. The studio exports packed sheets with TexturePacker, Godot and Aseprite data for effects you make there.

Questions

Is this sprite sheet maker free?

Yes, with no sign-up, watermark or limit on use. It runs in your browser, so your frames are never uploaded anywhere.

In what order are the frames placed?

In file name order, counting numbers the way people do, so frame_2 comes before frame_10. Rename the files if you need a different order.

Should I add padding?

Add 1 or 2 px when your game scales or filters the texture, or when you see thin lines from the next frame at the edge of a sprite. Pixel art drawn at 1x with nearest filtering usually needs none.

Can I make a sprite sheet with JSON data?

This free tool writes the grid sheet and shows the grid numbers. The studio writes TexturePacker JSON, Godot SpriteFrames, Aseprite JSON and GameMaker strips for effects made there, with a plan.
