Video to sprite sheet converter
Turn a video clip into a sprite sheet: pick the start, end, frame rate and size, remove a black or green background, and download a PNG sheet or GIF. Free, no upload.
Drop a short video and turn a slice of it into a sprite sheet. Stock VFX filmed on black (fire, smoke, sparks, explosions) come out with real transparency. Everything runs in your browser: your file is never uploaded, there is no sign-up and no watermark.
How to make a sprite sheet from a video
- Drop an MP4 or WebM clip on the box above. Any video your browser can play works.
- Under Video, set Start and End to the part you want. Keep it short: one or two seconds is a lot of frames for a game.
- Pick the Speed (frames per second sampled from the video) and Frame width. 12 to 15 fps and 128 to 256 px suit most 2D games.
- Under Background, choose Black for effects filmed on black, so their glow becomes transparency, or A colour for a green screen or flat backdrop, and adjust the tolerance.
- Press Download sprite sheet (PNG), or Download GIF for a quick share.
Making it loop
Video clips rarely loop by themselves: the last frame jumps back to the first. Pick a start and end where the motion matches, or use a particle effect built to loop instead. Every effect in the library loops perfectly, and the guide to seamless looping VFX shows how.
Size budget
Sheets get big fast: 2 seconds at 15 fps is 30 frames, and at 256 x 256 px that is a 1536 x 1280 px sheet. Lower the frame width or the frame rate if your engine or platform has a texture limit. The converter keeps up to 240 frames.
Put effects on your sprite

Questions
Which video formats work?
Any format your browser can play, usually MP4 (H.264) and WebM. Some MOV files from phones use HEVC, which only some browsers play; convert those to MP4 first.
How do I remove the black background from fire or explosion footage?
Set Background to Black. Brightness becomes transparency, so bright flames stay solid, dim smoke turns see-through and the black disappears. Then use additive blending in your engine for the best glow.
How many frames should a game effect have?
Most 2D game effects use 8 to 32 frames. More frames look smoother but cost texture memory; 12 to 15 fps is the usual rate for pixel art and 24 to 30 fps for smooth effects.
Is the video uploaded?
No. Frames are read from the video in your browser and the sheet is made on your device.
