Pixel Art Laser Grid Trap

Pixel art laser grid trap: ceiling turrets sweep burning beams across a corridor floor while tripwire lasers between two posts switch on and off in a pattern, throwing sparks and leaving a glowing scorch line. Use it as a seamless security hazard in stealth games, heist levels, platformers and sci-fi dungeons.

Pixel Art Laser Grid Trap is a pixel art effect that loops seamlessly every 4 seconds, drawn on a 432 by 360 canvas at 3x pixels. It is built from 9 particle emitters and 7 laser beams. Most layers blend additively, so it glows on dark backgrounds.

HOW IT'S MADE

Pixel Art Laser Grid Trap centres on 7 laser beams drawn as glowing strips, with 9 particle emitters around them. Techniques worth a look: collisions, particles stretched along their motion, keyframed parameters and post filters (bloom). 31 scene layers (ground and props) show in the studio for context and stay out of every export.

Every layer emits continuously and the 4 s loop closes seamlessly, so it can run for as long as you need. To recolour the beam, select "Tripwire top" and change Core and Glow; Thickness sets its width. Pixel size in the Pixel art panel sets how chunky it looks. The colour swatches by the downloads recolour every layer at once.

  2. Tripwire top, Tripwire low, Tripwire middle +2laser / additiveA laser beam firing sideways. It pulses 9 times a second.
  3. Sweeper beam 1, Sweeper beam 2laser / additiveA laser beam firing downward. It pulses 12 times a second.
  4. Scorch line, Scorch lineparticles / additiveA steady stream of pixels. Colour runs from white to deep red over each life.

  6. Hit flare, Hit flareparticles / additiveA steady stream of soft glows. Colours range between pale orange and red.
  7. Burn smoke, Burn smokeparticlesA steady stream of smoke puffs. They sway from side to side and grow as they age. Colour: dark grey.
  8. Hit sparks, Hit sparksparticles / additiveA steady stream of streaks. They fall under gravity, bounce when they hit something and slow down with drag. Colour runs from white to red over each life.
  9. Corridor dustparticles / additiveA steady stream of pixels across a box. They sway from side to side. Colours range between red and pale red.

USING IT IN YOUR GAME

Phaser, PixiJS
The PNG sheet is a plain grid of frames that both can slice. A TexturePacker JSON atlas comes with a plan, from the studio.
Unity
Import the PNG sheet as a Sprite with Mode set to Multiple and slice it, or open the effect in the studio for a ready-made grid.
Godot 4, GameMaker, Aseprite
Open it in the studio and pick your engine in Export: with a plan, it writes the files that engine imports.
Web and chat
The GIF plays anywhere; the APNG keeps soft edges on any background.
Blend mode
This effect is made of light. For the same glow in your game, draw the sprite with additive blending, or export it on black from the studio for additive shaders.

Step by step: Unity, Godot 4, Roblox, GameMaker, Phaser and PixiJS, Aseprite, Web games (live runtime). Drawn with additive blending: see glow effects without a black box.
