Falling Icicles

Falling icicles: three icicles drip, shake loose from a cave ceiling and drop one after another, smashing on the floor into bouncing shards with a frost puff. Plays once per loop.

Falling Icicles is an HD effect that loops seamlessly every 2.6 seconds, drawn on a 384 by 384 canvas. It is built from 18 particle emitters.

Free download with a transparent background, cropped to the effect, 78 frames at 30 fps. Use it in commercial games, no credit needed.

Licence: use it in any project, including paid commercial games such as a game sold on Steam. There is no per-project licence to buy and no credit needed. Terms.

Roblox: the download is a flipbook for a ParticleEmitter. Set FlipbookLayout to Grid8x8, FlipbookMode to OneShot and Lifetime to 2.6, then emit one particle per cycle. Roblox setup.

HOW IT'S MADE

Falling Icicles stacks 18 particle emitters, each with its own job. Techniques worth a look: collisions, particles stretched along their motion, keyframed parameters and post filters (bloom and vignette). 4 scene layers (ground and props) show in the studio for context and stay out of every export.

It loops seamlessly every 2.6 s, and 15 of its layers fire in bursts, so it pulses instead of flowing evenly. Start times are staggered from 0 s to 1.47 s, so the layers arrive one after another. It carries little colour of its own, so it takes a tint well: select "Smash Flash" and set Colour A and Colour B. Size on the same layer sets how big its particles are.

Layers, in draw order

  1. Icicle 1particlesOne burst of 14 shards at 0.77 s. They are flung outward, fall under gravity and bounce when they hit something.
  2. Tip Drip, Tip Drip, Tip DripparticlesA stream of streaks, its rate keyframed over the loop. They fall under gravity and vanish when they hit something. Colour: pale blue.
  3. Frost Dustparticles / additiveOne burst of 8 soft glows along a line at 0.1 s. They fall under gravity. Colours range between white and pale blue.
  4. Smash Flashparticles / additiveA single particle at 0.77 s. Colour: white.
  5. Frost PuffparticlesOne burst of 6 smoke puffs from a ring at 0.77 s. They grow as they age and slow down with drag. Colours range between white and pale blue.
  6. Ice ChipsparticlesOne burst of 14 shards from a disc at 0.77 s. They fall under gravity, bounce when they hit something and spin. Colours range between white and blue.
  7. Icicle 2particlesOne burst of 14 shards at 1.09 s. They are flung outward, fall under gravity and bounce when they hit something.
  8. Frost Dustparticles / additiveOne burst of 8 soft glows along a line at 0.48 s. They fall under gravity. Colours range between white and pale blue.
  9. Smash Flashparticles / additiveA single particle at 1.09 s. Colour: white.
  10. Frost PuffparticlesOne burst of 6 smoke puffs from a ring at 1.09 s. They grow as they age and slow down with drag. Colours range between white and pale blue.

6 more layers are in the studio.

USING IT IN YOUR GAME

Phaser, PixiJS
The PNG sheet is a plain grid of frames that both can slice. A TexturePacker JSON atlas comes with a plan, from the studio.
Unity
Import the PNG sheet as a Sprite with Mode set to Multiple and slice it, or open the effect in the studio for a ready-made grid.
Godot 4, GameMaker, Aseprite
Open it in the studio and pick your engine in Export: with a plan, it writes the files that engine imports.
Web and chat
The GIF plays anywhere; the APNG keeps soft edges on any background.

Step by step: Unity, Godot 4, Roblox, GameMaker, Phaser and PixiJS, Aseprite, Web games (live runtime).
