Napalm Firestorm

Napalm strike effect for 2D games: a splash of fire that spreads along the ground, burns in licking tongues and pours thick black smoke into the wind before it dies down.

Napalm Firestorm is an HD effect that plays once over 3.2 seconds, drawn on a 512 by 384 canvas. It is built from 1 simulated smoke and fire layer and 4 particle emitters. Most layers blend additively, so it glows on dark backgrounds.

Roblox: the download is a flipbook for a ParticleEmitter. Set FlipbookLayout to Grid8x8, FlipbookMode to OneShot and Lifetime to 3.2, then emit one particle per cycle. Roblox setup.

HOW IT'S MADE

Napalm Firestorm is built around a fluid simulation of fire and smoke on a grid, with 4 particle emitters on top. Techniques worth a look: particles feeding the fluid, turbulence, particles stretched along their motion, keyframed parameters and post filters (bloom).

It plays once over 3.2 s: "Flash" goes off first, and "Embers" joins at 0.2 s. To change the flame colour, select "Napalm fire" and edit Fire colours; Smoke colour sets the smoke. The colour swatches by the downloads recolour every layer at once.

Layers, in draw order

  1. Flashparticles / additiveA single particle at 0.02 s. It grows as it ages. Colour: pale orange.
  2. Napalm firefluidSimulated fire and smoke from a line. "Gas lobes" feed it. Wind carries it sideways.
  3. Gas lobesparticles / additiveOne burst of 16 soft glows from a disc at 0.03 s. They feed smoke and heat into the fluid, fall under gravity, shrink as they age and slow down with drag. Colours range between orange and gold.
  4. Sparksparticles / additiveOne burst of 40 streaks along a line at 0.03 s. They fall under gravity and slow down with drag. Colours range between pale gold and orange.
  5. Embersparticles / additiveA steady stream of streaks along a line. They wander on turbulence. Colours range between pale gold and orange.

USING IT IN YOUR GAME

Phaser, PixiJS
The PNG sheet is a plain grid of frames that both can slice. A TexturePacker JSON atlas comes with a plan, from the studio.
Unity
Import the PNG sheet as a Sprite with Mode set to Multiple and slice it, or open the effect in the studio for a ready-made grid.
Godot 4, GameMaker, Aseprite
Open it in the studio and pick your engine in Export: with a plan, it writes the files that engine imports.
Web and chat
The GIF plays anywhere; the APNG keeps soft edges on any background.
Blend mode
This effect is made of light. For the same glow in your game, draw the sprite with additive blending, or export it on black from the studio for additive shaders.

Step by step: Unity, Godot 4, Roblox, GameMaker, Phaser and PixiJS, Aseprite, Web games (live runtime). Drawn with additive blending: see glow effects without a black box.
