HOW IT'S MADE

Sprite Death Shatter plays on a character sprite, with 4 particle emitters around it. The hero itself gets hit flash. Techniques worth a look: collisions, keyframed parameters and post filters (bloom). A scene layer (ground or a prop) shows in the studio for context and stays out of every export.

It loops seamlessly every 1.9 s, and 3 of its layers fire in bursts, so it pulses instead of flowing evenly. To change its colour, select "Cold puff" in the studio and edit Colour A and Colour B. Size on the same layer sets how big its particles are. To see it on your own character, press Use my sprite in the studio: every layer follows the new sprite.

Layers, in draw order

  1. Frozen heroparticlesOne burst of 30 shards at 0.55 s. They are flung outward, fall under gravity and bounce when they hit something. Colours range between pale cyan and pale blue.
  2. Hit flashspriteThe character sprite. Extras: hit flash.
  3. Frost glitterparticles / additiveA stream of stars across a box, its rate keyframed over the loop. They swell and then shrink away. Colours range between white and pale cyan.
  4. Ice chipsparticlesOne burst of 36 shards from a disc at 0.55 s. They fall under gravity, bounce when they hit something and spin. Colours range between white and blue.
  5. Cold puffparticles / additiveOne burst of 8 soft glows from a disc at 0.55 s. They grow as they age and slow down with drag. Colours range between pale blue and cyan.

USING IT IN YOUR GAME

Phaser, PixiJS
The PNG sheet is a plain grid of frames that both can slice. A TexturePacker JSON atlas comes with a plan, from the studio.
Unity
Import the PNG sheet as a Sprite with Mode set to Multiple and slice it, or open the effect in the studio for a ready-made grid.
Godot 4, GameMaker, Aseprite
Open it in the studio and pick your engine in Export: with a plan, it writes the files that engine imports.
Web and chat
The GIF plays anywhere; the APNG keeps soft edges on any background.

Step by step: Unity, Godot 4, Roblox, GameMaker, Phaser and PixiJS, Aseprite, Web games (live runtime).
