Melting Ice Block

An ice block melts from the top down with drips running into a growing puddle and steam wisps rising, then refreezes with sparkles. Seamless loop for heat puzzles and fire versus ice moments.

Melting Ice Block is an HD effect that loops seamlessly every 3.6 seconds, drawn on a 384 by 384 canvas. It is built from 9 particle emitters.

HOW IT'S MADE

Melting Ice Block stacks 9 particle emitters, each with its own job. Techniques worth a look: sprite modules, a sprite dissolve, sub-emitters set off by other particles, collisions and post filters (bloom and vignette). 2 scene layers (ground and props) show in the studio for context and stay out of every export.

It loops seamlessly every 3.6 s, and 2 of its layers fire in bursts, so it pulses instead of flowing evenly. To change its colour, select "Steam Wisps" in the studio and edit Colour A and Colour B. Size on the same layer sets how big its particles are. The colour swatches by the downloads recolour every layer at once.

Layers, in draw order

  1. Melt PuddleparticlesA single particle at 0.3 s. It swells and then shrinks away. Colour: blue.
  2. Puddle SheenparticlesA single particle at 0.3 s. It swells and then shrinks away. Colour: pale blue.
  3. Ice CubespriteA placed image. Extras: shine sweep and dissolve.
  4. Melt Drips Sourceparticles / additiveA stream of pixels from the sprite's dissolving edge, its rate keyframed over the loop. They spawn "Melt Drips Rim" as they appear, spawn "Melt Drips Body" as they appear and spawn "Melt Drips Highlight" as they appear. Colours range between orange and gold.
  5. Melt Drips RimparticlesStreaks set off by "Melt Drips Source". They set off "Drop Ripples" on impact, fall under gravity and vanish when they hit something. Colour: blue.
  6. Melt Drips BodyparticlesStreaks set off by "Melt Drips Source". They fall under gravity and vanish when they hit something. Colour: blue.
  7. Melt Drips HighlightparticlesStreaks set off by "Melt Drips Source". They fall under gravity and vanish when they hit something. Colour: white.
  8. Drop RipplesparticlesRings set off by "Melt Drips Rim". They grow as they age. Colour: white.
  9. Steam WispsparticlesA stream of soft glows from the sprite's dissolving edge, its rate keyframed over the loop. They sway from side to side and grow as they age. Colours range between white and pale blue.
  10. Refreeze Sparklesparticles / additiveA stream of soft glows from the sprite's dissolving edge, its rate keyframed over the loop. Colours range between white and pale cyan.

USING IT IN YOUR GAME

Phaser, PixiJS
The PNG sheet is a plain grid of frames that both can slice. A TexturePacker JSON atlas comes with a plan, from the studio.
Unity
Import the PNG sheet as a Sprite with Mode set to Multiple and slice it, or open the effect in the studio for a ready-made grid.
Godot 4, GameMaker, Aseprite
Open it in the studio and pick your engine in Export: with a plan, it writes the files that engine imports.
Web and chat
The GIF plays anywhere; the APNG keeps soft edges on any background.

Step by step: Unity, Godot 4, Roblox, GameMaker, Phaser and PixiJS, Aseprite, Web games (live runtime).
