Pixel Art Rain Loop

A seamless pixel art rain loop to lay over any pixel game scene: slanted rain in three depths, far drops dim and slow, near drops long and fast, landing in tiny splashes and ripples.

Pixel Art Rain Loop is a pixel art effect that loops seamlessly every 2 seconds, drawn on a 512 by 512 canvas at 4x pixels with the Sweetie 16 palette. It is built from 8 particle emitters.

Free download with a transparent background, cropped to the effect, 60 frames at 30 fps. Use it in commercial games, no credit needed.

Roblox: the download is a flipbook for a ParticleEmitter. Set FlipbookLayout to Grid8x8, FlipbookMode to OneShot and Lifetime to 2, then emit one particle per cycle. Roblox setup.

HOW IT'S MADE

Pixel Art Rain Loop is pixel art, drawn at 4x pixels and locked to the Sweetie 16 palette, and built from 8 particle emitters. Techniques worth a look: sub-emitters set off by other particles, collisions and particles stretched along their motion.

Every layer emits continuously and the 2 s loop closes seamlessly, so it can run for as long as you need. To change its colour, select "Far Rain" in the studio and edit Colour A and Colour B. Size on the same layer sets how big its particles are. Pixel size in the Pixel art panel sets how chunky it looks.

Layers, in draw order

  1. Far RainparticlesA steady stream of streaks along a line. They vanish when they hit something. Colour: deep blue.
  2. Mid RainparticlesA steady stream of streaks along a line. They set off "Mid Splash" on impact and vanish when they hit something. Colour: blue.
  3. Wet GlintsparticlesA steady stream of pixels across a box. Colour: deep blue.
  4. Mid SplashparticlesPixels set off by "Mid Rain". They fall under gravity. Colour: blue.
  5. Near RainparticlesA steady stream of streaks along a line. They set off "Splash" on impact, set off "Ripple" on impact and vanish when they hit something. Colours range between blue and white.
  6. SplashparticlesPixels set off by "Near Rain". They fall under gravity. Colours range between white and blue.
  7. Ripple, RippleparticlesPixels set off by "Near Rain". They ease to a stop. Colour runs from blue to deep blue over each life.

USING IT IN YOUR GAME

Phaser, PixiJS
The PNG sheet is a plain grid of frames that both can slice. A TexturePacker JSON atlas comes with a plan, from the studio.
Unity
Import the PNG sheet as a Sprite with Mode set to Multiple and slice it, or open the effect in the studio for a ready-made grid.
Godot 4, GameMaker, Aseprite
Open it in the studio and pick your engine in Export: with a plan, it writes the files that engine imports.
Web and chat
The GIF plays anywhere; the APNG keeps soft edges on any background.

Step by step: Unity, Godot 4, Roblox, GameMaker, Phaser and PixiJS, Aseprite, Web games (live runtime).
