Pixel art portals and teleporters

Free pixel art portals for games: a portal door, a teleporter pad, a respawn beam and a save point crystal, as looping sprite sheets and GIFs.

Updated

Portals, teleporters and save points are the landmarks of a level: the player has to find them across a room, so they glow, move and loop forever. The effects below are idle loops to place in the world, plus a beam for the moment a player appears.

Every effect here is free. Its page has DOWNLOAD GIF and PNG SHEET buttons that need no account: the files have a transparent background, are cropped to the effect and run at 30 frames a second. To change an effect first, press OPEN IN THE STUDIO; a free account exports 3 effects a day.

Portals and save points

Make a landmark read

  • Motion pulls the eye. A slow swirl or particles drifting inward tell the player a portal is active long before they read its colour.
  • One colour per use. Keep blue for teleporters and save points, red or violet for danger, so players learn them without a tutorial.
  • Light on the floor. A glow or ring at the base sits the effect on the ground instead of floating in front of it.
  • An active state. Play a brighter version, or a short flash, when the player saves or steps in.

Change it in the studio

  1. Open Pixel Art Portal Door in the studio.
  2. Under Quick tweaks, press a Colour swatch for a different portal, and Faster or Slower to change the swirl.
  3. Press Export and choose Spritesheet or GIF. The loops repeat with no visible jump.

Questions

Do the portals loop seamlessly?

Yes. Each portal, teleporter and save point here is a perfect loop: its last frame leads into its first, so it can play for as long as the player is in the room.

Can I change the portal colour?

Yes. Open it in the studio and press a Colour swatch under Quick tweaks, or snap it to your palette under Pixel art and palette.

Why does my pixel art effect look blurry in the engine?

The engine is smoothing the texture when it scales it. Set the texture filter to nearest neighbour (Point in Unity, Nearest in Godot, turn off texture interpolation in GameMaker) and scale the sprite by whole numbers, such as 2x or 3x, so every pixel stays square.

Can I use these pixel art effects in a commercial game?

Yes. Exported effects, including ones started from the library, can be used in any project, including paid games sold on Steam or console stores, with no per-project licence and no credit needed. The few effects that contain CC BY sprites by CodeManu say so on their page and ask you to credit CodeManu.
